Due to the aging population in North America in general and here in Canada to be specific and the commitment from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Resident Care to provide long term care beds, there is an increasing demand for trained administrators and managers. This diploma program targets the skills & knowledge necessary for managers/administrators working in this sector and provides students with an understanding of the long-term resident care industry.

This diploma program is ideal for those candidates with an academic background or managerial experience in a related health or business discipline. The competency-based curriculum will prepare the students for a challenging, dynamic management career in a recognized sector.

Graduates find work as administrators, managers in the healthcare industry (i.e., residents, hospitals, long-term resident care facilities, community-based agencies, the Ministry of Health, paramedic services, etc.). Atlantic Business College requires that students enrolled in the Resident Attendant Program complete all the courses listed below. To receive a diploma a student must receive a minimum mark of 60 in all compulsory courses and successful completion of all
Clinical Work Placement hours.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Graduates will understand the historical underpinnings of long-term resident care in Canada and the role of healthcare financing
  • Graduates will understand the fundamental tenants of long-term resident care in Canada
  • Graduates will understand current legislation and major issues impacting long-term resident care delivery in Canada
  • Graduates will understand the ethical obligations present in long-term resident care
  • Graduates will understand government regulations regarding family/caregiver applications to the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care
  • The graduate will understand the fundamentals of Ontario legislation regarding workplace health and safety
  • The graduate will understand the core competencies of Infection Protection and Control in the healthcare environment
  • The graduate will gain a fundamental understanding of the role, function, and scope of the multidisciplinary team
  • The graduate will understand the functions of older-adult health and body system
  • The graduate will build a definition of Leadership in Healthcare
  • The graduate will understand the role and functions of a healthcare leader
  • The graduate will understand the value of teams, their functions, and the application of leadership skills
  • The graduate will develop skills and strategies to manage conflicts, make decisions, and solve problems
  • The graduate will know the importance of effective communication
  • The graduate will develop the knowledge and skills in data acquisition, quality indicators, and measurement to ensure the quality of care in healthcare

At the completion of this course, the students will be able to:

  • Describe the evolution and funding of long-term resident care in Canada
  • Explain the status of long-term resident care today and the issues it faces
  • Describe ethical concerns common to long-term care resident care settings and approaches for dealing with such concerns
  • Identify challenges related to mental health in long-term resident care
  • Recognize the importance of strategic planning
  • Implement tools and techniques to make quality improvements
  • Use common communication and decision-making models to improve your leadership skills

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Students must meet one (1) of the following admission requirements:
  • High school graduation or
  • GED or equivalent or
  • Mature student – Detailed resume outlining experience and qualifications must be submitted.
